This document has been used several times in my career. During my time as an independent contractor for IU 13, I was asked to create this document that would be used by any school district wishing to apply for the Keystones to Opportunity Grant. This very intensive Needs Assessment looks at various aspects of the educational environment, including several areas relating to technology. Districts rate themselves on a scale from 0-4, and if awarded grant funds, will have to demonstrate that they are working to increase scores in areas that showed needing improvement. As an employee of an awarded district, the Needs Assessment has been used to share the priorities of the district with the staff.
This Needs Assessment addresses many areas aside from technology. Viewing the ratings that were assigned for each category in my district was very enlightening because it helped me put in perspective all of the other priorities our district has in addition to technology. Because this is a district assessment, it also helped me understand the common goals within our district, and not just the priorities within my building

As a conclusive project in ITC 425, students were asked to compose a report discussing characteristics of effective educational networks. This report outlines the who, what, where, when and how of designing effective networks designed for the educational sector. This report overviews cost, personnel, hardware, software, and policy issues driving the purchase and selection of materials needed to support an educational network.
ITC 425 explored many of the "back end" work that goes into creating and maintaining an effective network for educational institutions. What was most enlightening to me were the many legal considerations that impact decision makers on this end. As an educator and librarian, I was well aware of the legislation that directly impact me and my student, but was a bit ignorant to the legalities that surrounded the hardware used within a school district.

Recently, Hempfield School District decided to switch to Sapphire as its student management system. Because Destiny Library Manager does not integrate with Sapphire, all student data needs to be entered manually into our library management system. In order to see all of the data needed to complete the record on Destiny, the librarians are given additional privileges within the system. I personally do not feel the system to be as intuitive as some of the other student management systems I have used in the past, but it is my responsibility to fully understand how to use the program to ensure student records are accurate, up-to-date, and remain secure.
While I do not maintain grades for students, it is very important that I have accurate data since I see every student in the building. Sapphire contains student IEPs, GIEPs, 504 plans, as well as identifies whether the student is ELL. It is very important that I have this data regarding my students as it greatly impacts my planning and modifications. Additionally, as an educator I have legal responsibilities to protect this data.
