Hempfield School District purchased a license to SpringShare's LibGuide software. This software is used by the district librarians to organize and present resources to staff on a variety of subjects. I assisted in the creation of both LibGuides - one on Social Studies curriculum and another on Digital Citizenship - to assist teachers locate digital resources related to these topics.
This year, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on Social Studies and on Digital Citizenship. With the announcement of the Government Keystone Exam, the district has chosen to realign its curriculum to better meet the needs of students to succeed in the Keystone Exam. Due to this change, many veteran teachers are finding themselves having to locate new teaching resources. Using my technology skills and knowledge of the Social Studies standards, the district librarians were able to create this LibGuide to support the Social Studies Department. Similarly, a large emphasis has been directed to the instruction of digital citizenship. Since both the Guidance Department and the Library Services Department are working on this, the decision was made to create a LibGuide in order to share the resources to all parties involved.

This Instructional Packet, or "How-To" guide, created in ITC 515, outlines how to use Microsoft Word, a commonly used software, to create and publish a Web Page. I chose this topic because I am the Webmaster for the Hummelstown Area Historical Society and find that a lot of people are very interested in publishing a webpage, but feel they do not have the knowledge or skills to do so. This packet gives step-by-step instructions, with screenshots, to saving a Word document as an .html document and publishing the document online.
While there are many "free" website creators available online - Weebly being one of them - I find that many novice users are deterred by the amount of options available. Microsoft Word is a fairly intuitive program that has a huge base of users. I find that many feel more comfortable using a tool they already know, rather than learning a new one. Using this insight, I created this Instructional Packet to help those in this category create, publish, and share their own website.

This document has been used several times in my career. During my time as an independent contractor for IU 13, I was asked to create this document that would be used by any school district wishing to apply for the Keystones to Opportunity Grant. This very intensive Needs Assessment looks at various aspects of the educational environment, including several areas relating to technology. Districts rate themselves on a scale from 0-4, and if awarded grant funds, will have to demonstrate that they are working to increase scores in areas that showed needing improvement. As an employee of an awarded district, the Needs Assessment has been used to share the priorities of the district with the staff.
Having the opportunity to work on both sides of this document - both the creation of the document and also the implementation - has been incredibly beneficial. It has taught me that with each districts unique demographics and needs, that technology may not always be the first and foremost priority of a district. Sometimes I feel that I have a bit of a bias toward technology implementation because I personally am so fond of it. However, now having seen the weaknesses in other areas, I have a better understanding and more patience when it comes to implementing more technology in the district.
